HARARE, Dec. 5 (Xinhua) -- The Reserve Bank of Zimbabwe (RBZ), or the central bank, on Friday unveiled new bond coins that are expected to ease change problems created after the country adopted a multicurrency system in February 2009.
RBZ governor John Mangudya told journalists that the South African minted coins were expected to push down prices of commodities as they had been originally priced with the absence of coins in mind.
He said the 10 million U.S. dollars worth of bond coins -- constituting about two percent of current bank deposits -- will come into operation on Dec. 18.
Valued at par with the U.S. dollar puma suede classic grigie , the coins will be in 1c, 5c, 10c, 25c and 50c denominations.
Initially all denominations will be available except for the 50c which will be introduced in March next year puma suede classic blu , Mangudya said.
He said the country will also import 30 million South African Rand coins to buttress the multiple currency system where the United States dollar is the dominant currency followed by the South African Rand.
Mangudya said the government intended to limit to 10 percent the proportion of coins circulating in the economy which has 5.2 billion U.S. dollars banking deposits.
He also dispelled fears that the government was trying to reintroduce the banished Zimbabwean dollar through the bond coins.
"We can never be so careless to re-introduce the Zimbabwe dollar. We have no appetite to do that and we won't do that," he said, adding that the multiple currency regime would remain for the foreseeable future until the country's economic fundamentals are back on track.
"It will be economic suicidal if we are to do that as a bank," he said.
The central bank governor reckoned it may take four to five years before Zimbabwe re-introduced its own currency which it dumped in early 2009 after being rendered worthless by a decade of hyperinflation.
He explained that Zimbabwe made the mistake of going 100 percent dollarization without leaving room for small change puma suede classic rosa , hence the introduction of the bond coins was aimed at addressing the small change gap.
"Other countries go for 80 percent, 70 percent dollarization but our experience in Zimbabwe is unique in that we have 100 percent dollarization. That is why we have to think outside the box," he said.

"The demand in these currencies has been low and unfortunately we can't force people to open accounts in these currencies. It's costly to the banks," he said.
